Introducing David Town

Last  year I had the pleasure of meeting a new friend and colleague, David Town.  David is from Bend Oregon.  The day we met, David had been surfing at San-O with another good friend of mine, Larry Cecil.
David heard that Larry was stopping by my shop after surfing.  David came with him and Larry introduced us to each other.    I immediately found David to be a bright and likeable young man and learned that he was also a talented board builder, shaper and fin maker.

After getting to know David and seeing examples of his work it became clear to me that David is one of the right minded, right hearted and exceptionally talented craftsmen in our industry.  He creates beautiful balsa boards and wooden fins, including ones modified for center box application.

David is a generation younger than I and so is a bit younger in his career than I.  Because of  David's natural talent, the quality of his work already and his true appreciation and understanding of the art involved in our craft, I have been pleased to share with David some of the technical methods, tools and timesaving tricks of our craft that I developed over the years or that were earlier passed down to me.  Truth be said, he already possessed many of them.

The timing of our introduction is important in another way.  I am retiring from surfboard and fin making as a business.  It gives me great comfort to know that I can refer future inquiries to
David Town with a very high recomendation regarding his talent and abilities.

John: Both sorry and happy to hear you're retiring. Sorry that far fewer folks will be able to get JC fins and boards, but happy that you'll have more time to spend in the water, with your guitars and with your honey.

Cheers and happy trails, sir!

NOOOOOOOOOO!!!

John, I'm a longtime lurker and hollow wood paddleboard maker in Northern Ontario, Canada.

What do I know from making wood fins? Only what I can try and steal from studying your blog photos of the design and build process - that's what.

I mean, I'm blowing up images and looking at reflections on shiny surfaces trying to figure out your frickin' magic, man!

Please, may I ask one request before you, perhaps, shut down the blog? Could you please do a start to finish post on the steps involved in making one of your finbox fins?

My big question - what the hell kinda setup do you have for setting the sanded wood fin into the resin finbox section with the Lexan(?) tab section? That one's blowing my mind.

That said, I completely understand if you prefer not to reveal hard won trade secrets developed over many years.

Great respect. Thank you ever so very much for the example of your exquisite craft. What you have done is to throw a symbolic gauntlet onto the floor of the eternal, great hall of designers who take this whole thing very, very seriously. Yes, we stand on the shoulders of giants, but you have done the selfless service of documenting what you do and the naked beauty of your craft that all may enjoy and learn from.

I should stop because I could go on for pages and pages about what you've given us all.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Very nice and creative wooden surfboards. I like collecting surfboards accessories so much and I find that your surfboard is very unique.
